7 ways the IOC saps the fun out of the Olympics | Alternet
“Sapping the fun” is one way to put it. Another would be “harbors an environment for corruption”… and whatever results from that.
I’ve heard more than a few of these rumors, which I suspect they’re not rumors at all. Show up in too much Nike gear, get sent home. While it may seem very superficial and even funny on the surface, think about what they’re saying here. Local vendors cannot sell french fries. McDonalds essentially has complete ownership and monopoly of the London french fry market?
This is the system we’ve created, folks. Rather, the system we’ve allowed to manifest unto itself. This is global corporatism that stretches far beyond that of the typical political cronyism. Pretty sick.
A commenter made me think of something interesting. I wonder if anyone, anywhere has done any research regarding the long-term effects of hosting olympic games. Actually let me rephrase. I wonder if someone will begin this research. Let’s just go back to 1992. Long-term effects on Barcelona? I don’t know. But I know that Spain’s economy is in the shitter. 1996 in Atlanta. There is no doubt there was an immediate positive effect hosting the ‘96 games had on Atlanta. What about long-term? What about on a larger scale? Our economy is in the shitter. Sydney, again I don’t know, however, isn’t it said that Australia has been somewhat immune to the worldwide global financial problems? I’m completely typing out of my ass right now… “typing out loud”, if you will. Athens? No explanation needed. Beijing??? And now London. I would be hesitant to go back further as the landscape of corporate sponsorship, or the power it had over everything, was probably different, was it not?
Correlation? It’s a very, very big stretch, but think about who’s really making the money here. Where does that money go, long after the olympics have ended? A Canadian Business article questions the projections. Another article explains some of these predictions.
Regardless of unfounded theories, the grip big corporations have on every single aspect of every detail of everyone involved in these games is deplorable and disgusting.
